Cookie Policy

Last updated July 14, 2026

Loc8ID uses very few cookies — essentially just what's needed to keep you signed in. Our analytics is self-hosted and cookieless, and we use no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. This policy explains what we do use, and the browser storage we rely on.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files a website can place on your device. Related technologies — like your browser's local storage — let a site remember information on your device too. This policy covers both.

Cookies we use

Essential cookies (required)

These are needed for the site to work and can't be turned off — they're set when you sign in or the site needs to keep a secure session. A session also carries a security (CSRF) token; it isn't a separate cookie.

Cookie Purpose Duration
loc8id_session Keeps your signed-in session and secures form submissions Session

Analytics — cookieless

We measure aggregate usage with Umami, which we host ourselves. It is cookieless, does not track you across other websites, builds no advertising profile, and is never shared with Google, Facebook, or an ad network. We do not use Google Analytics or any cross-site tracking.

Local storage on your device

Instead of cookies, we use your browser's local storage to remember small preferences and interface state. This data stays on your device and is not sent to us as a cookie. It includes things like:

  • Your theme (light/dark) and preferred map style
  • Recent searches and interface state (such as a collapsed panel)
  • Places you've marked as visited
  • One-time tips you've already seen, and a short-lived note to resume an action after you sign in
  • Your approximate region, cached to open the map somewhere sensible

You can clear this at any time from your browser's site-data settings.

Third-party cookies

When you use certain features, third-party services may set their own cookies:

Service When / Purpose Privacy Policy
Stripe Only on checkout — payment processing and fraud prevention View
Google Only if you sign in with Google View
Facebook Only if you sign in with Facebook View

Map tiles and place search are provided by our mapping partners; loading maps may involve requests to them. See our Privacy Policy for the full list of providers.

Do you need a cookie banner?

Because we use only an essential session cookie and cookieless analytics — and no advertising or cross-site tracking — we don't show a consent banner. Third-party cookies only appear if you choose to use a feature that needs them (like paying or signing in with Google/Facebook).

Managing cookies

Browser settings

Most browsers let you control cookies and clear site data. You can:

  • Block all cookies
  • Delete existing cookies and local storage
  • Allow cookies only from specific websites
  • Set cookies to expire when you close your browser

Step-by-step guides for each browser:

Important note

Blocking the essential cookie or clearing local storage may sign you out or reset your preferences, and some features may stop working.

Updates to this policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. We'll post the new version on this page and update the "Last updated" date.
